Note: The Internet gives us nearly limitless information, but it can be misleading, as industry-funded, but neutral-seeming, websites spread through cyberspace. A few keystrokes and a little search engine prodding, though, can quickly get you to the truth. Anytime you visit an informational website, spend a few minutes figuring out who is supporting the site, before you explore further. Project Evergreen (projectevergreen.com), for instance, looks like an environmentally friendly organization promoting “the economic and environmental value of healthy, well-maintained green spaces.” But dig a little and you’ll find its funding comes from some of the biggest agrichemical companies, including Dow AgroSciences, Syngenta, and TruGreen ChemLawn

Web Sleuthing Resources:

  • sourcewatch.org: background information on companies, front groups, and individuals.
  • opensecrets.org: searchable database of political contributions and lobbying spending by individuals, corporations, and industries.
  • guidestar.org: searchable financial and organizational data on all non-profit organizations in the U.S.
  • ewg.org: online databases and research tools, including a resource section on agricultural subsidies and pesticide body burden.
  • archives.org: this site’s “Wayback Machine” catalogues websites, starting in 1996. If you?re looking into a company or organization that no longer has a website online or active, you might find it archived here.
